Given the chart success of their Grammy-winning country single “Who Says You Can’t Go Home,” it’s no surprise Bon Jovi upped the ante by recording an entire album paying homage to Nashville. In some ways, it’s amazing they didn’t do this sooner, given the way Keith Urban in particular is blurring country-pop lines, much as Garth Brooks and others did in the 1990s. To their credit, you won’t find predictably shallow invocations of past country

icons or any self-conscious, in-your-face down-home twang added strictly to remind the listener of the musical premise. In fact, Lost Highway isn’t “Bon Jovi goes country” so much as a meaningful tribute to the Nashville ethos done on their own terms. They honor the spirit of the town through 12 simple, direct originals. The intimate, smoldering “(You Want To) Make a Memory,” the ballad “Seat Next To You,” “Lost Highway” and its roaring celebration of freedom, and “Stranger,” an effective duet with LeAnn Rimes, all invoke country’s spirit, and “I Love This Town,” an eloquent nod to Nashville itself, ties it together admirably. –Rich Kienzle

While it’s true that all of the songs on Seriously Good Music should in fact be considered bossa nova (something that cannot always be said with regard to all of Petrol’s releases), the album certainly misses most of the names that defined that genre. Antonio Carlos Jobim, for example, is found only in the fact that he co-wrote three of the songs (“Corcovado,” “Desafinado,” and “Meditaçao”) included, and Sergio Mendes, Chico Buarque, and João Gilberto are lacking completely. That doesn’t mean that there’s not some good bossa nova on the compilation: Wanda Sá, who’s featured four times, has a great, warm voice that fits perfectly with the rhythms and tones of the music, and Os Cariocas’ “Telefone” is fantastic as well. Yes, it’s true that this record isn’t claiming to be the definitive bossa nova collection, but its title is still a bit deceptive. ~ Marisa Brown, All Music Guide。

Having followed the Erotic/Sinners Lounge series for quite some time, I decided to pick this up to not so much for the music featured, I just wanted to add this volume to my collection since I have most of the others. This volume of Erotic Lounge has two cds, just like the other erotic lounge releases, one cd labeled “Soft and Lazy” and the other “Quick and Dirty”. The overall sound of the songs featured on “Bare Jewels” mainly focus on acid jazz, break beat, trip hop, and whatever is in between.

“Soft and Lazy”, some of the songs featured on that disc sound anything but, yet they flow seamlessly with the same mood and the songs remain consistent with the vibe. My only complaint is that some of the songs are once again “recycled” from past installments, namely “Dance Naked Under Palm Trees” by Mo Horizons and “You Have to Come With Me” by The Funky Lowlives. These songs are great and all, they fit in with the whole vibe, but I just don’t want to hear them again and again on every Erotic Lounge Compilation.

I purchased this CD while on vacation in Europe and was blown away. It made every hotel my wife and I stayed in very enjoyable. It is a great CD to listen to from foreplay to finish. It is also a great CD just to throw on and enjoy while inebriated. It also has some great pictures on the inside booklet. I will be purhasing the other CD’s in “the art of loungin’” set as well.

Erotic Lounge: They’re half right. It’s lounge music, but I wouldn’t describe it as erotic. This is a nice collection of mostly instrumental, jazzy lounge music. The only problem is that they’ve packaged it is as being sensual and erotic. One disc is called Quick and Dirty, while the other is Slow and Lazy. Combine this with the softcore pic on the cover of a lady’s legs, high heels and undies coming off, and the message is clear. But when I put the CDs in, it just seemed like your average lounge music with lots of drum machine and synthesizer tracks. And the Quick and Dirty disc is neither quick or dirty. I wouldn’t call it sexually charged at all.

It’s a nice collection of mostly instrumental music, but was packaged and marketed incorrectly in my opinion.

The covers on this 1965 gem are a bit more obscure than on the Stones’ first two long-players, not a bad thing for a band still getting its writing chops together (if admirably; “Heart of Stone” and “Surprise, Surprise” are particularly strong). If there were still doubts that these London kids had any business playing this music, a casually scorching “Down the Road Apiece” should have allayed them; the stomp they lay on Bo Diddley’s “Mona” and Jagger’s lazy drawl on the New Orleans obscurity “Down Home Girl” make for canny mood changes. –Rickey Wright

Customer Review

Like most of the other early Stones albums, there’s good music here, but not enough of it. A couple excellent singles: Little Red Rooster is by far the best of their early blues covers, thanks to Brian’s slide and harp and Mick’s dead-on bluesman vocals; and Heart of Stone, a sullen R&B-infused rocker. A few of the originals here are derivative lyrically, but still fun: What a Shame is packed to the brim with clever hooks; Off the Hook has an entertaining harmonica part, and Surprise Surprise is pretty much all Charlie. That guy could drum, all right, why did he never take a solo? Anyway, Mona is also a solid tune, one of their best (and most underrated) early covers. As usual, though, I can’t really speak for much of the rest: There’s a good reason why songs like Everybody Needs Somebody to Love; Down Home Girl; You Can’t Catch Me and the ridiculously over-the-top Pain in My Heart disappeared like they did. So there’s filler galore here, but patient Stones fans will find a lot to like aobut Now!
